I can't really speak about anything before Patience, but there was a lot more promotion for that album 10 years ago throughout the biggest European markets in comparison to Symphonica (which is a bit of weird album anyway, remember how SOTLC did in a much stronger period for GM). He has been practically unavailable for this campaign (no TV appearances, no radio interviews), the single release was perfunctory at best (no physical format, no b-sides, no nothing), the album is promoting a tour which european part ended in 2011. All of this makes the work Universal has done so far all the more impressive. Compare GM's chart positions with Kylie's to see the massive difference in performance. And her album is a studio effort, not to mention she's been more succesful than him chartwise the last 10-12 years or so.

Don't get me wrong, it's nothing spectacular, but considering the circumstances, i am slightly impressed.

P.S. And Germany is actually the biggest European market, so i expect Universal to put more of an effort there in terms of printed promotion and the likes.
Yes, I understand you,
but I dont think that radio interviews or TV are important outside of the UK for selling more items. Only short statements or pieces from interviews are going to be published here and there and it was for years, the whole interviews are not really interesting for the wide audience, it doesnt matter if interviews from GM or Lady Gaga. Sure, he did some interviews and live performances outside of the UK for Patience album but this album was promoted as the last GM album ever, also a reason why Patience went to #1 in some Europian countries.

I think it was everything right with budget for Symphonica pr, GM peaked #1 in the Uk (he doesnt with SFTLC) and I dont think he would reach higher positions for a standard album in rest of the Europe with more radio interviews or a cd single from Symphonica, for several reasons. The European chart positions for Symphonica are even better than for SFTLC, and we know that SFTLC was not that really good promoted but it was right after his coming out and it was 15 years ago, demand was higher.

Fair enough, but when you're promoting a person (via his music product) and said person is not available, it hurts the whole campaign. TV and radio appearences build awareness, that's all.

I agree with you on most points though, I simply expected it to bomb hard outside of Britain and it still got good positions in some of his strongest markets - The Netherlands, Italy, UK and it did fairly well in the German speaking parts. Then again the latter have always loved Robbie and Depeche Mode more, haven't they?

I have to say that this is a quite high new entry for the greek chart based on the fact that the physical CD has not yet released in Greece!!!!

All sales numbers come from the iTunes downloads (and 2-3 more legal downloading sites) that have started selling the tracks on the 17th of March.

Hoping that Universal Greece (Minos EMI) will finally release the physical CD this week, I expect its sales to increase (& its relevant chart position accordingly).

We'll see...

Oh yes, Robbie is still very often on TV, also DM community is big enough! Still.

There will be Greek release for the album? As far as I remember last Greek release was for Faith Album 1988.

Chart Moves: Kylie Minogue and George Michael Debut, the War On Drugs ...
Billboard

-- George Michael, "Symphonica" - No. 60 - The veteran pop star collects his tenth charting album, as his first release for Island Records bows at No. 60 with 6,000 sold. The live album is also the final work produced by the late Phil Ramone, who died on March 30, 2013. The set mostly consists of covers other artist's work, but does include a couple of familiar Michael tunes (like "One More Try"). Michael last charted in 2008, when two different versions of his greatest hits album "TwentyFive" charted.
